Moving to a new place is an exciting and fun experience, but it is also a lot of hard work. In order to make the process as smooth as possible, we have put together a short list of common mistakes that can be easily avoided. Trust us, we’ve done this a time or two! We know what happens that will make a move a hassle and what goes into a smooth move.
- Gathering moving boxes all in size large or size medium instead of size small.
It’s easy to have the mindset: I’ll save money if I get a few large boxes that all my items can go into instead of a ton of small boxes!” Unfortunately, this will make your move less organized and much more work. You will end up with a lot of incredibly heavy boxes that are difficult to move. Labeling the large boxes will be less orderly since they will have many odds and ends stuffed in them. Small boxes will be more organized for each type of item. They will be easier to carry and take to a specific room. Trust us on this one! Many small boxes will go a lot smoother than a few large boxes.
- Forgetting to label boxes in a specific manner.
Everyone knows to label their boxes, that’s easy! The problem comes when you can’t find a specific cord to a television or you place your sponges in a box with office supplies and can’t find them for a week. Instead of “OFFICE,” label the box “OFFICE: desk organizer, lamp, pens, sponges, stapler.” Being able to tell everything that is in a box just by looking at it is much less of a hassle than having to rip open each box to find one small item.
- Waiting to pack until the day of the move.
Moving can be stressful, which makes it easy to procrastinate and leave until the final moments. This only makes everything more stressful in the end. In order to have a timely, organized, and hassle-free move, try to start packing a week to two weeks beforehand. Start by taking down all the nonessentials, like wall decor and shelves. Pack up clothes that aren’t needed for in the season you’re moving. Put away extra towels and guest blankets that aren’t being used. Sure, you’ll be living in a box-heavy environment for a bit, but your future self will thank you for not leaving everything until the day before or day of the move. A day or two before the move, pack everything else. Use a suitcase to put the clothes you’ll need for the next few days as well as toiletry items and a couple towels. Make sure to put some paper towels and rolls of toilet paper in the suitcase so they are easy to locate as soon as you move in. This will make it easy to find everything you need to get a good night’s rest the day you move in. You won’t have to search through boxes for those essential items.
These mistakes are simple to make but easy to avoid. Follow our advice and you’ll be sure to have a less stressful move!
