How to Get Organized After a Move

Whether you have kids, pets or are single, moving can be a stressful time. You packed up your belongings, hired an Omaha moving company and now everything has arrived at your new place, but you are not sure what to do next. Staring at rooms full of taped up boxing can be scary, but there are some unpacking tips to help you get through it.

Have a Plan

Before you start opening up the boxes that your Omaha moving company brought in, come up with a plan for each room. If not, you’ll put things where you think they look best at the moment, but you may end up spending a lot of extra time later on moving your belongings around again. Taking some time to figure out which cabinet you want the plates and bowls in may seem tedious but can really pay off. If you have a plan of where you want things hung on the walls, you can either put them up as you go or set them in the general area to get to at the end. This way you want end up with a huge stack of pictures piled in the corner for weeks to come.

What to Unpack First

If you have kids, consider unpacking their rooms first. This way they can stay occupied with their toys while you continue going through boxes. Not to mention, you’ll probably be up unpacking long after they go to bed. Getting your bathroom and bedroom unpacked next is a good idea. You will probably be exhausted from the move, and you don’t want to worry about your bed being ready for you to sleep in when the time comes. The kitchen should also be near the top of your list. You may be able to get away with picking up some food or ordering something on moving day, but you will want to be able to use your dishes pretty quickly. After these essentials are done, it is really just a matter of what room you’ll be using the most and going from there.

Clean as You Go

Most people do not enjoy cleaning, but it has to be done when you move. The movers take any wrappings they used for your furniture, but the trash is your responsibility. After you unpack, you are going to have boxes, bubble wrap and trash to get rid of. Once you are all unpacked and settled in, the last thing you want to deal with is cleaning up all of the moving supplies. This is why cleaning up each box before you move on to another can make your life much easier. When the last box is finally unloaded, you won’t have a huge mess to deal with, and you can enjoy your new space without having to walk through a maze of boxes.

While hiring an Omaha moving company is a huge help, at the end of the day you are responsible for organizing your belongings in your new home. This can be exciting and overwhelming, and it is often times hard to know where to begin. Just remember, if you are feeling stressed after the movers leave, make a plan and go from there.
